After two wonderful lectures of Professor Heidi Ross, on 23rd Feb, she made another lecture about The Why,What, and How of CIE Comparatove Methodology sharing her views and points with our faculty and students.
The lecture involves three parts. Firstly, through the definition, she compared the difference and similarities between “method” and “methodology”. Secondly, she analyzed WHY COMPARE? COMPARE WHAT? And COMPARE HOW? Finally, by means of video, Preschool in Different Culture, in America🙆🏽♂️、China and Japan, she compared them and claimed the application of the different methodology.
In the part of WHY COMPARE?, she mentioned three dimensions——scientific⇾、pragmatic and global, and insists that it could contribute to the development of an increasingly sophisticated theoretical framework in which to describe and analyze educational phenomena, and even help foster cooperation/mutual understanding among nations by discussing cultural differences and similarities and offering explanations for them.
In COMPARE WHAT6️⃣?, regarding the broad and narrow concepts, she talked about the chosen cases and their purposes and their variables in cases.
In COMPARE HOW?, she mentioned multilevel analysis (3D, as geographic、demographic and aspects of education and society) and ethnography in comparative education, which can help us make the familiar world of schooling strange and the strange world of schooling familiar, as video-cued, multi-vocal ethnography.
During and after the video broadcasting, our faculty and students have hot discussions with Professor Ross and obtained benefits from this lecture. At last, Professor Xu Xiaozhou, the deputy dean of College of Education, expressed his appreciation to her great lectures and gave her special gifts on behalf of our college.
